How do we handle change? This question always sparks my curiosity. I decided to take a step back to explore the concept from the standpoint of how people view change.
Before I prepared my article, I did a quick search of the topics in Google to get a sense of people’s interest.
Can you guess how many people searched the topics on how to handle change? My search returned over 82 million hits. Obviously, there is a strong interest in finding answers. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to it. Understanding and managing change is an experiential process. We cannot deny that we live in a virtual World where technology has dominated people’s mindset. However, even in this advanced technological era, Google cannot replace the human aspect of life.
First, I believe is important to understand how we view change in our lives.
Our paradigm…How do we view change?
My perception of change is “a constant motion either forward or backward.” Hopefully, the focus is on the forward motion.
We must understand that change is part of our existence. Change unfolds in front of us every single day, minute and second. Being mindful about the simple, daily changes make us realize that change is necessary for evolution. Everything around us and about us is constantly changing. For example, every sunrise and sunset are unique in their display of colors. The ocean manifests its tempers with every distinct wave that comes ashore. The night skies display an array of astral bodies in different positions and levels of brilliance. The four seasons are the maximum expression of change. Of all, the simplest but life sustaining change is our breathing. Every breath we take is different than the last.
No doubt change is part of our human condition. We must embrace change in our life journey.
The big question…How do we handle change?
Let’s get back to the big question, how do we handle change? I believe our paradigms or how we view the World have a direct influence on our decisions and actions. Taking a step back and “seek to understand” our reaction to change, is a first step. Are we the types of persons who deny change; run away from change or face change head on? More than likely, that is going to drive our actions towards change. When we sit in silence and reflect, we know how we have handled change in the past. Some may have been favorable actions, some may not have been so favorable. We are humans! Whatever the case may be, we must always try to focus on the lessons learned from the experience. That is important to make the necessary adjustments within ourselves to handle future changes.
We are built to endure change, and capable of developing strong resilience.
I believe how we handle change is situational and depends on the individual. There is no one right answer. However, knowing what our mindset is, where we stand, and the resources we have in our toolbox, will give us a better chance to embrace change effectively.
Let me share one of my recent life experiences. My husband and I have gone through a series of challenges including the loss of multiple loved ones, Covid 19 infection, and relocation out of state, all within a 2- 3-month period. The circumstances required us to remain open and adaptable to face these rapid changes. The path to our new place was not easy. After the storm has passed, I am joyful and grateful for the experiences because they showed me that possibilities are unlimited.
Handling change is a constant moving target. Do not fear change, instead see change as an opportunity to grow. Embrace it!
Hopefully, I sparked some curiosity in you to explore deeper.
Allow me to share one of my written quotes:
